I've spent a good portion of my life trying to get a handle on the stress, anxiety and depression that interrupt my quality of living. I've read self help books, seen therapists, and talked with my doctor about stress and anxiety treatment options.
While I was getting some relief from anxiety, it just wasn't enough. I spent so many nights awake well past midnight, scrolling through social media, watching TV, and counting sheep.
One night, I saw a post on Facebook about how diamond painting had helped someone with anxiety. Out of curiosity, I purchased a small diamond painting to see if it could help me too.
I'm excited to share that it did! I spent an entire weekend working on my diamond painting and never once thought about the problems going on in my life, or felt the anxiety that comes with those thoughts. I felt calm and at peace, like I could take on the world.
There is something that happens when you paint with diamonds that keeps your brain fully engaged and distracted from unwanted thoughts. I am not a medical expert, but I think it has something to do with the repetitive hand + eye coordination combined with the satisfaction of watching your diamond art come to life.
The clicking sound that square drills make when they snap into place is also soothing for many folks, along with the tactile feel of the diamond painting when you rub your hand over it. The sparkle when diamond drills catch light is beautiful, and I often found myself extremely eager to finish my diamond art so I could proudly display it on my wall for everyone to enjoy.
Diamond painting is not just a hobby for me, it's a tool I use to combat stress and anxiety and improve the overall quality of my life. I highly recommend it to everyone, and especially those who needs a break from the stress and anxiety that keeps them up at night.
What is diamond painting?
Diamond art is much like paint-by-numbers, except you use a pen like tool to place small rhinestones (drills) onto a very sticky canvas. Each color has its own symbol so you know where to place the rhinestone. The finished effect is somewhat mosaic looking, like a complete cross-stitch pattern. In fact, the colors used in diamond art are the same as the DMC chart used in cross-stitch embroidery. Many folks who can no longer cross-stitch due to arthritis or visionary problems often turn to diamond painting.
I already enjoy adult coloring as my stress relief, why should I try diamond painting?
The relief from stress and anxiety you get while coloring is the same many have experienced while doing diamond art. Unfortunately, diamond painting is a bit harder to do while you're on the go, but partaking at home is equally rewarding, if not more. I started adult coloring years ago and loved how it cleared my mind of unwanted thoughts. Sadly, I suffer from arthritis in my fingers and despite using soft colored pencils, I just couldn't color anymore and eventually turned to diamond art.
